Is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre bleeding in Jerusalem?

The anointing stone in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is anointed daily with holy oils and myrrh

The Custody of Holy Land Denies

(Jerusalem) In recent days, a video from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem has been widely circulated on social media. It is supposed to prove that blood and oil are currently gushing out of the anointing stone at the entrance to the basilica. The Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land issued a statement yesterday. First, here's the video:

And here is the statement of the Custody of the Holy Land:

Custodia Terræ Sanctæ

The Custody of the Holy Land would like to make it clear that it has nothing to do with the video that has appeared on the Internet claiming that the anointing stone in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre has begun to excrete oil and blood.

The stone is anointed daily with fragrant myrrh, and the faithful collect this oil with handkerchiefs or garments, which they keep for personal devotion in remembrance of the death of our Lord Jesus Christ.

There is no supernatural phenomenon that could corroborate the statements in the text accompanying the video, and no Franciscan of the Custody of the Holy Land is involved in this revelation.

Published by Custodia Terræ Sanctæ on Wednesday, November 8, 2023

The Custody of the Holy Land was founded in 1217 by the General Chapter of the Franciscan Order. Shortly thereafter, St. Francis of Assisi himself attempted to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Through his influence on the Sultan of Egypt, the Franciscans obtained toleration in the Holy Land when, after the victory of the Islamic armies over the Crusaders, all Latin Christians were expelled from the country. In 1333 they succeeded in obtaining custody of the Upper Room and have since been able to regain or repurchase other holy places. In 1342, the Pope officially commissioned them to look after the interests of the Church of Rome in the Holy Land.

Luxembourg’s Jesuit Cardinal Doesn’t Believe in Miracles

Cardinal Hollerich, Jesuit and Archbishop of Luxembourg.

(Luxembourg) Luxembourg has only 614,000 inhabitants, half of whom are foreigners, mainly because of the EU institutions. Despite being such a small country, the Grand Duchy has almost 500 people infected with coronavirus. For comparison: the Empire of Japan, which has a population of 126,860,000, two hundred and seven times more, almost only Japanese, does not even have twice as many diseases with 963 cases.

The first coronavirus case only occurred in Luxembourg on February 29 and in Japan on January 16. A significant number of illnesses (more than 25) were only reached in Luxembourg on March 12 and in Japan on February 5.

Luxembourg, open to all sides, which reacted just as late as other EU member states, has been affected by the coronavirus epidemic a hundred times more quickly than Japan in a much shorter period of time.

The Archbishop of the Grand Duchy, Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich SJ, who is also President of the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Union (COMECE), is also in quarantine.

The cardinal commented on the coronavirus epidemic in a telephone conversation with the Luxemburger Wort, the country's largest daily newspaper, the majority of which is owned by the archdiocese. The advocate of open borders said that "some people" didn't "believe" in miracles.
Archbishop Hollerich was asked what he said to the faithful, who were disappointed and outraged by the bishops' draconian measures to suspend all masses in some countries. His answer:

“Most people understand this because it's about saving lives. Saving the lives of the elderly and the vulnerable part of the population, not putting them at risk. And most people take it very well. But there are also some who complain: And now we are being taken away! Or where there is such a belief in miracles, which I do not share. ”

The cardinal's sober-sounding answer is rather sobering. Belief in miracles plays an important role in Christian belief, because through miracles Christ has revealed Himself as the Messiah and son of God and testified to his authority.

For Cardinal Hollerich, does this all belong to a distant past that no longer plays a role today and now? Does Cardinal Hollerich believe that God has withdrawn from his creation? Or does he believe that God can no longer work miracles in the 21st century? Or does the cardinal make a probability calculation?

No matter how you look at it, such an answer comes from the mouth of a prince. Or is it perhaps a good fit with the European Union, which he represents as the chairman of the episcopal conferences?
The questioning of the archbishop and confrom of Pope Francis appears questionable in another respect. The journalist of the Luxemburger Wort emphasized that petition processions are being held in several locations to seek protection from the almighty against the epidemic. Throughout the ages, petition processions have been a tried and tested means of Christianity to seek heaven's help against epidemics and other evils.

Cardinal Hollerich, however, vigorously contradicted:

“I call the faithful to prayer, but never to processions. The only ones who enjoy processions are the viruses. ”
The cardinal's horizontal view seems to lack the vertical perspective. The Jesuit, who was created by Pope Francis a Cardinal in October 2019, may be surprised, but there are still devout Catholics who believe in miracles and who are convinced that God, as the creator of heaven and earth, really is Lord of all creation and that it is entirely conceivable that He wants to say something to humanity even with a coronavirus pandemic.

This is contrasted by shepherds who limit themselves to being willing and hasty executors of state instructions, even in areas such as culture where the state has no jurisdiction.

Cardinal Hollerich emphasized: "Protecting life must be an absolute priority", but some might doubt that he meant eternal life.

Oldest Frescoes of St. Benedict Rediscovered in the Ruins of Norcia Monastery

Newly Discovered Frescoes, St. Benedict of Nursia
(Rome) The heavy earthquakes that shook the birthplace of Benedict of Nursia in the late summer and early autumn of 2016 also brought down the consecrated basilica in Norcia's city center. In the rubble, the oldest fresco of the ba
silica was discovered last month.
It is a representation of the saint who founded the Benedictine order in the 6th century. "Due to the collapse caused by the earthquakes, the image came to light," said the Director of the Heritage Office of Umbria, Marica Mercalli. "At present, the collapse-endangered parts of the wall are being cleared away in the transept."

"A precious sign" from the rubble.

"The fresco is of great importance. It was discovered last March by the prior of the Benedictine monastery of Nursia, who also bears the significant name of Benedict. Now we were able to document it in all its beauty," says Mercalli.
The Benedictines knew nothing of this fresco before the earthquake. It only shone from the rubble of the church. "The discovery is a valuable sign for us," said the Prior.
After Napoleon had expelled the Benedictines from the birthplace of their founding father, the first return of monks took place in Holy Year 2000It is an Old Rite convent that revives the Benedictine tradition in Norcia.
The monastic community lost everything in the earthquake, the monastery and the churchThe basilica had been given to them by the local bishop of Spoleto for pastoral care, but also as convent church. In recent years, the monks gradually took the necessary steps for the celebration in the traditional form of the Roman Rite of restoration, as the basilica was up to the liturgical reform of 1969.
With the reconstruction of the basilica after the earthquake, however, the church was deprived of them again by the new local bishop, because he wants to rebuild the ruined church as "modern." This would be make its further use by the monks impossible anyway. The monks accepted the decision in humility and did not say a word about it. Others speak of an "unfriendly" act of the bishop, especially since the funds for the reconstruction were promised by the Italian Prime Minister.
The monks lived in tents after the earthquake. Meanwhile, they were able to build an emergency monastery and an emergency church made of wood, which were consecrated on the Feast of the Holy Cross.

Lourdes: A Girl Born Deaf Can Now Hear

(Paris) She was born deaf. This past May 11 shortly before 20:30 she took off her prosthesis and said to her mother: "I no longer need this. I hear now." We're talking about a little girl who was staying with her mother, her grandmother and her brother on pilgrimage in Lourdes.
"The girl was born prematurely on December 25 of 2009. To save her, her doctors administered the drugs that damaged her hearing organs. In Gaslini Hospital of Genoa their own prostheses were used as hearing devices had no effect on her. With the help of speech therapy she learned in the course of time to read lips and speak with difficulty. Her story was told Giuseppe Secondi, the Unitalsi conductor of Milan West, who led the pilgrimage with the girl. Unitalsi is an ecclesial service, the Ambulance service operates at  Lourdes and other international as well as Italian sanctuaries.
As a gift to her family, the mother decided to make a thanksgiving pilgrimage to Our Lady at Lourdes with the children, which included her own mother.
Our Lady of Loudes
The pilgrimage took place in the usual way. Prayer, Holy Mass, dipping into the wells. On the evening of May 11, "we returned after the conclusion of the Eucharistic procession to the hotel," said the mother. "I was playing a bit with the kids, then I wanted to go to the meeting of the pilgrims who are first time attendees on a pilgrimage to Lourdes. When I told my daughter that I would go away but be inevitably long, she suddenly said in a clear voice, as she had never spoken before, that I should stay."
During the meeting pilgrim pilgrimage conductor Secondi was called. He was told that the girl had taken her hearing prosthesis out and told the mother that she no longer need it, because she could now hear.
"We stood in disbelief in front of her. From an adjoining room we called her several times with a soft voice and have found that she could really hear us.  Above all, she now speaks very clearly, very different than before."

"I thank you, dear Mother, for what you have done to me"

The next morning Secondi wanted to apply to the Bureau des Constatations Medicales to report the case. Previously, he had accompanied the girl to the grotto. While they were there, he said to the child: "Let's go to my Madonna, mine has a crown on her head."  So we went to the great Lady of Lourdes, crowned statue of Our Lady. As we stood in front of her, the girl said to my astonishment: "I thank you, dear Mother, for what you have done to me."
Then we went to the Bureau des Constatations Medicales. In the waiting room there was a stylized representation of Marie. The girl said: "this is ugly."  When we came into the doctor's room, a picture of the Blessed Mother crowned was hung: "This is the Madonna," she said with satisfaction.
The doctors examined her in detail, then the mother. They performed listening tests. Investigations have since continued in Italy and are still underway. Doctors in Genoa have presented to their astonishment, a cure of the hearing organs. There was also a change in character that took place. The previously very closed, introverted, girl has now become wholly different.
In Lourdes one proceeds with caution and accurate investigations are necessary before a miracle is recognized. The surveys will therefore take some time to complete. The girl and the family are certainly happy and grateful.

Aberro-Activists Wanted to Disturb His Wedding

Edit: we have been wondering what happened to him for a while, and just saw this on kath.net. Translated it.

The American blogger Thomas Peters sits in a wheelchair after an accident. In an interview he talks about his still firm faith, his marriage and his work.

Washington DC (kath.net/jg) In a rare interview, the American blogger Thomas Peters (29) has spoken about his faith, his work and his life as a paraplegic. His faith had survived the severe accident which would have cost him nearly killed, he told the British Catholic Herald.

In 2006 he began the blog "American Papist" was founded. The site was successful from the start. Peters was one of the most well-known blogger in the US and was a frequent guest on television and radio broadcasts. Later, he became involved in the "National Organization for Marriage" (NOM), an organization that is politically committed to the protection of traditional marriage and family.

In the course of his wedding in 2012, he began to feel the negative effects of his popularity. There were multiple threats from gay activists to disrupt the wedding. Peter therefore hired a security guard.

A little over a year later the blogger suffered serious injuries of the spine in a swimming accident. He remains in a wheelchair and is learning to move his right hand.

Medical advances may be a miracle. With his injuries he was supposed to be paralyzed from the neck down. But he can move his arms, his left hand and his torso. His faith is still strong, confirmed Peters, who grew up in a Catholic family with five brothers and sisters. He continues to write blog entries on the website catholicvote.org be published. He has also developed an online application to facilitate political commitment. Link to Kath.net... AMDG

Pathologist: 'Odor of Sanctity' Surrounds the Remains of Lionheart

Charlier reports on his studies of Richard the Lionheart.

Munich (kath.net/ CBA)  Philippe Charlier (37), doctor and France's most famous pathologist, has made very significant findings in his investigation of  historically significant corpses. So the   heart of the English King Richard the Lionheart (1157-1199), wrapped in linen, has about it an "artificial odor of sanctity", as exuded by martyrs, Charlier told the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" (Thursday). The mixture is apparently  composed of roses, daisies, myrtle, mint, frankincense, tea oil and mercury, maybe a little lime.

He had already smelled such a fragrance on Mount Athos in Greece, added the doctor. "This is a very intense aroma, very pleasant." During his recent visit to Munich, he had viewed the relics in the Church of Our Lady and St. Peter. Some came from the Roman catacombs and had also exuded the fragrance of holiness.

According to the pathologist, Lionheart, who participated in the Third Crusade, among other things, had  "some problems, considered theologically". In the battles with the French King Philip II. August, many Christians had suffered death. For 33 years Richard would atone in purgatory. Therefore, his body was embalmed accordingly. "That should help him to go directly to heaven."

His next task will be to examine the remains of the French kings in the Cathedral of Saint Denis, Charlier announced. The tombs have been sealed since 1827. But there should probably bones, skulls and other skeletal parts in the tombs are completely in disarray, because they had been desecrated during the French Revolution in 1789. What had been done to them by the molester, should now be put in order, but the approval for it is difficult, admitted the pathologist, since two families would have to agree.

Charlier stressed that it was extremely important to him that human remains did not come from the investigations into a museum, but would be buried again. "The best place is where we found them." His relationship to death has not changed by his work with  corpses that he has been doing for nine years, says the pathologist. However, since he has two sons, he thought differently about  death after that, especially as babies and young children. His doctoral thesis on medical ethics have left their mark. Before that, he wanted to examine all the skeletons from all available museums. "Now -- and I'm absolutely not religious -- I think we must respect the will of the dead."

Poland's Communist Dictator Died Reconciled to the Church

(Warsaw)  two days ago the former self-confessed atheist and communist dictator of Poland, Wojciech Witold Jaruzelski (1923-2014), passed away on May 25th in Warsaw, provided with the last sacraments and reconciled with the Catholic Church.
Jaruzelski was born into a Catholic family of the Polish gentry. The family fled to Lithuania to escape German troops  where it was captured by the invading Soviet troops and deported to the Altai Mountains. Jaruzelski and his father had to do forced labor. To avoid this, the 20-year-old joined the Polish Bering-Army established in the Soviet Union, which fought alongside the Red Army against the Axis powers.

Despite Soviet Deportation He Entered Into the CP

After the Second World War, he was admitted to the General Staff Academy. After the Soviets had wiped out the Polish officer corps  in 1940 at Katyn, Moscow built from 1945 a new Army loyal to the regime.  Thus, Jaruzelski joined the ruling Communist Party in Poland in 1947, established with Soviet Help in 1945, which became in 1948 the Polish United Workers' Party  (PZPR). In addition to the military, Jaruzelski quickly made a political career. In 1956 he was promoted to General, from 1964 he was a member of the Central Committee of the PZPR. He was defense minister in 1968 because of his loyalty to the regime and led to Poland by the crushing of the Prague Spring.

 Solidarity Suppressed With Martial Law

When the free trade union movement Solidarity  under Lech Walesa shook the communist regime in Poland, Jaruzelski himself  was at the head of the regime and could withstand this   for several years. In 1981 he became Prime Minister of Poland, took over the party leadership of the PZPR and imposed martial law, outlawing Solidarity  which was supported by Pope John Paul II,  and forced it underground. He was later to be justified that  the clampdown was in order to prevent a planned military intervention by the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact by an intra-Polish solution. From 1985 to 1990 the general was Polish head of state.
His role in the Communist regime around the break-up of Solidarity and whether  democratic change followed because of his resistance is still controversial. In 1997 it became known that Jaruzelski had asked for military aid against the imposition of martial law in Moscow, should there be a need for it. In 2007 charges were  brought against him of Communist crimes. The former general was threatened with a conviction for high treason. Because of his poor health, the trial has been suspended.

Grace of Faith

As it is now from Poland,  the former Communist dictator died reconciled with the Catholic Church in his 91st year. The declared atheist and opponent of the Church was still touched at the end of his life   by the grace of God. He returned to the faith of his childhood, received the last sacraments, and died in the bosom of the Church. Perhaps this is thanks to the prayers of many Polish compatriots, who prayed for his conversion, which included the Polish Pope.

Would This Were the End of the Lay Apostolic Magisterium: Pennies from Heaven

Update:  For those who are wondering if there will be a recording of this.  Michael Matt TV-3 was on the jorb and his guys were assiduously recording the event for posterity.

Edit: in the bowels of the parish church of St. Augustine's, built in the depths of the 1929 Correction, above the slaughter houses, to the rails along the flowing river, along the charming boardwalks and neatly kept lawns and gables of the old working class neighborhood, a "debate" just took place in the presence of about 500 men, some from as far away as Spain, Ohio, points north and south.   Present were Michael Voris, President of Church Militant, Michael Matt, editor of the Remnant, Dave Deavel, a Fellow at St. Thomas University and Mark Shea, a catechist who is an apologist for the rotting and decaying ecclesiastical structures in the United States.

What was supposed to have been a debate was really more of an intervention, maybe a divine intervention, where the people ranged against each other, however poorly they presented themselves, or how well, was overwhelmed by the persistence of Christ's words and the holy dogmas of the Catholic Church.

Indeed, the stated reason for the debate wasn't important.  It wasn't a debate, really.  The questions offered, or the way they were presented were disgracefully emotional and practically incoherent.  Yet Voris is not only a professional television presenter, he is also a trained theologian.  Thus, he spoke clearly, persuasively and had facts at his disposal that gradually withered his opponent's position to ridicule.

You might say it was a slaughter, and being the home of a slaughter house, South Saint Paul is also, coincidentally, the home of the  murderous elected representative Betty McCollum and the apostate from Catholicism and former governor, Tim Pawlenty.  Both of them are sadly products of Catholic education.

In South Saint Paul,  on warm spring days, the stench of the yards would waft over the bluffs, with an assault to the mind of death and decay. In mind of such poetic circumstances it is difficult to maintain that the Church is in a "New Springtime", or that dogmas can be changed after 1,900 years as certain luminaries were trying to maintain.  And yet there are other causes for alarm not restricted merely to Catholics leaving the Church, or politicians who vote for abortion. Catholics who believe what the Church teaches are not only ridiculed by those who don't, but worse things, perhaps.

Plates of partially cooked, overwhelmingly spicy brats were mostly eaten by the captivated men. Some surely would have given their birthrights for a half-cooked brat. There was even an Archdiocesan spokesman there to offer a woeful and inadequate apology, if not an explanation, for why they're not subordinate enough to the spirit of the age.

The audience was also visibly divided and the mood of merriment and humor occasionally became hostile, even hateful as beer flowed into plastic cups.

At one point, the Parish Pastor, Father John Echert speculated if Mark Shea might think he were in Hell, and well he might be. It was in this mood that the "debate" continued as both Michael Voris and Michael Matt attempted to explain the significance of the Catholic Faith, but this wasn't acceptable to some in the room, who groaned, tittered and sneered.

Some, especially among the apologetics mafia, perhaps fearing a downturn in the economic fortunes of their families, manning money changing tables in the back, were visibly angry, occasionally interrupting Voris or Michael Matt, who were attempting to make clear the terrible state of the Church by discussing statistics, appealing to anecdotal stories and history.  But as much as they disliked what was being said, there were times when the concentration of 500 men built to a feverish pitch in the discomfort of the basement where the infernal temperatures caused tempers to flare.  Perhaps too, in its grotesquery, coupled with a relentless stupidity and pity, like Christ's Passion, as guards and the vulgar mob jeered and spat at Him. As He struggled under the weight of the cross to redeem those who despise Him.  There was a spiritual dimension present, in spite of the charnal setting, the horrendous food, the growing heat, the gross forms at the podium and in the audience, there was still a kind of angelic presence in the din, both good and evil.

It was a scene worthy of the brutal treatment of Flannery O'Connor whom bad Catholics like to quote, or worse still, by Evelyn Waugh who would have mercilessly portrayed the posturing of the debaters, the foggy lack of clarity, the tired digression and the words, the endless words.

But not all was lost. During question and answer, one brave voice, a Spaniard from the sound of him, asked what we as men should do to address what all agreed was the decay of the Church throughout the world. What was needed?

As Michael Voris attacked the Mundelein Seminary Rector, the publicly acclaimed but heterodox Father Barron, for supporting a novel opinion regarding the fewness of the saved, what must have been some  goblin in the crowd let out a cry.  Voris' opponent, quickly receding the background replied with a derisive wave of his hand, "If there's a problem in the Church, it's NOT Father Barron."
So shall it be at the end of the world. The angels shall go out, and shall separate the wicked from among the just.

It was then that Michael Matt talked about the importance of doctrine, of the oft argued against, hidden, denied dogma of Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus, that is, no salvation outside of the Catholic Church. He was impassioned about it and the room grew increasingly silent, like the darkness and silence that must have covered the world when He died.

Despite a last second interruption by Father Grebner, who attempted to talk about how Lumen Gentium says Protestants CAN be saved, even he seemed overcome by the moment, and attempted to describe how Lumen Gentium actually says only few are saved.

Everything else seemed to shrink in the room and was dominated by the thrice defined dogma, and the dark spirits in the air seemed to shrink away, while all-too-fallible laymen pondered the mystery of salvation and the constancy of the Church's teaching, and its true mission.  It's not enough to say we fast, pray and keep watch.  Without the Catholic Faith it is impossible to please God.  What must we do?

And he said to them: Go ye into the whole world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized, shall be saved: but he that believeth not shall be condemned. And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name they shall cast out devils: they shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they shall drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them: they shall lay their hands upon the sick, and they shall recover. And the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God. But they going forth preached everywhere: the Lord working withal, and confirming the word with signs that followed.

Note: a detente of sorts was achieved at the end, but who knows how long it will last or if it will even be improved upon.  Certain apologists go back to their vomit.

Mass Setting for the Transference of the House of Loreto

[Pius.info, Germany] On the 10th of December the Church celebrates the transference of the House of Loreto.   Pius.info has found the Mass setting:

According to God's resolve the Holy Home of Mary in Nazareth, in which she herself was born in and in which she received the message of the Archangel Gabriel of the Son of God becoming man, was transferred, so that destruction would not befall it.

Born by an angel's hand, it came on the 10th of May in 1291 to Tersato near Rijeka in Dalmatia, where it remained three years and seven months.  On the 10th of December 1294 it was brought by the service of an angel of God in the area of what is today,  Loreto. The tradition of the miracle of the transfer of the Holy House is testified by old documents, by investigations of the past as also through such in more recent and the most recent time, through the statements of Saints and mystically gifted persons and through the prolific miracles which have happened there.

Many Popes have spoken in favor of Loreto, not a few of them have visited Loreto.  The feast of Mary's birth (8 September) is celebrated yearly as its main festival, and the feast of the moving of the Holy House is celebrated on the 10th of December. --

The Mass text addresses the great Holiness of this place (Introitus etc.),  including the birth of the Most Holy Virgin (Reading), on the Incarnation of God (Evangelium) and on the miraculous moving of the Holy House to the former Land of the Popes, the Church State.

Brazilian Traditionalists on Pilgrimage

More than a thousand words:  As a Mass for the healing of the clergy was held, a crucifix began to bleed.  by Maria de Lourdes Couto, Rio de Janeiro

(kreuz.net)  On July 28th Traditional pilgrims betook themselves of the famous Sanctuary of  Jesus Crucified  in Porto das Caixas in the capital of Rio de Janeiro in southern Brazil.

The pilgrims were accompanied by Fr. Anderson Batista da Silva from the Archdiocese of Niteroi.

He celebrated the Old Mass at the sanctuary in the piety of a Missa Cantata.

A poor place

The pilgrims journeyed in one bus.  They came from the cities of Rio, São Gonçalo und Niterói.

Porto das Caixas is a very poor and unsightly place.

It was made famous in 1969, however, as a crucifix above the altar began to bleed during a Triduum for the healing of the clergy.

Flecks of blood on the altar cloth

Because there was no sacristan, the priest then had to prepare the altar himself.

At that moment, he noticed a red mark on the altar cloth.  He believed at first that it was just a stain.  So he he just cleaned the spot away.

Then he celebrated Holy Mass.

Human Blood

As Mass finished some faithful noticed that blood was dripping from the crucifix.

They notified the priest of it.

The blood ran from the wounds of Jesus.  A laboratory confirmed with certainty that it was human blood.

Till today, the Sanctuary of the Crucified Jesus is visited by numerous visitors.

To honor the Precious Blood

The Mass for the pilgrims was celebrated to honor the Precious Blood of Jesus.

Fr. Anderson Batista gave a brilliant sermon.

He is a great promoter of the Immemorial Mass of All Ages.

After the blessing the pilgrims had an opportunity to eat  and meet each other.

Finally, Fr. Batista gave a catechetical lecture, in which he emphasized the importance of personal repentance and the crime of abortion.

In an Indian Diocese the Number of Catholics Has Grown 40%

(New Delhi) In the Diocese of Itangar in the Indian province of Arunachal Pradesh the Catholic Church is experiencing extraordinary growth. The main reason for this are unexplained healings, which the Diocesan Bishop, Msgr John Kattrukudiyl reported on his visit to Germany, to which he was invited by the Papal aid organization "Kirche in Not".

Since 1980, the number of Catholics in the outlaying areas in north east India has grown 40 percent. The Bishop has continually received reports of healings, which "amaze". On first reaction one is inclined to "skepticism" said Msgr. Kattrukudiyl, "really the persons concerned are absolutely convinced that they have been healed by divine intervention."

The Bishop described a man who seeked out the Church after he had married a Catholic wman. "Upon becoming a Catholic one asked him to pray for a cripple. The next day, the cripple stood up and went on his own feet to Church". After his conversion, he's been an especially active member of the Catholic community.

Msgr. Kattrukudiyl is familiar with the skepticism, which which many in Europe would greet these reports of miracles. He has received this mainly in western countries. But against all of these doubts, "there are many healings, reported to me, which we simply can't ignore." The Bishop has looked for an explanation in the rellative youth of his Diocese. "It is the experience of a very young Church, which is experiencing the same grace, as in the times of the Apostles," as miraculous healings were common, as reported by the New Testament.

A common pattern is shown by the various unexplained healings. The miracles happen, after the faithful gather in a house to pray in common where someone is sick. "People, who have been sick for a long time, were healed. These people are living the experience of the early Church." The healings through prayer have led the Church to spread quickly. The situation of the Church in this area has improved significantly.

The Church isn't just tolerated, but is recognized and praised for its humanitarian activities. About one fifth of the population confesses Christianity.

Franciscan Imitates St. Francis, Rebuilds Church Alone for Fifty Years

Editor: Franciscans are "friars" not monks.

God Willed It

The unbelievable story of Father Pietro Lavini: From 1954 to 2003 he rebuilt a monastery completely alone, in an untraveled mountain area in the Apennines.

Montemonaco (kath.net) In the spring of 1954 Father Pietro disappeared without a trace from his Cloister to rebuild a ruined Monastery in the Apennines Mountains. In the summer of 2003 the Bishop of Father Pietro received a letter with the sentence: "The Monastery is finished."

Andreas Englisch told the story of the Italian priest in his book "Traces of God: Miracles of the Catholic Church". Englisch had also related this story to the Hamburg evening news.

In the spring of 1954 the Abbot of the Franciscan Cloister by Ascoli Piceno in Adria noticed that Father Peitro had vanished. After a fruitless search he was removed from the list of priests, which entitles them to government support. He was reported as missing.

In the Summer of 1971, in the mountains near Gola del Infernaccio, a deep canyon in the middle of the Apennines mountains, which are famous for falling stones and avalanches, a mountain climber met the monk and told his Bishop: "The priest had very long, matted hair and a filthy beard. He lived in the cold of the high mountains in a kind of improvised hut made only from a few branches and a torn plastic tarp."

He sustained himself with heavily moldy bread, greens and tree bark. With self-made tools, he broke stones from the cliffs, there he was completely alone, without money or machines, where he wanted to rebuild the ruins of a Monastery. He had even built an aqueduct which carried water across the canyon. He collapsed from work many times, suffered broken bones, which he cured by himself with herbs. He showed me his serious injuries. I feared, the man was severely mad."

The Bishop then sent an inspector with the mission to bring the priest to a psychiatric clinic of the Franciscans. After his expedition, the inspector reported to the Bishop that after many discussions attempting to persuade Father Pietro, that "the brother isn't mad, rather he is a saint. I bid his blessing and hope that the Church will leave him there, where he is, completely close to God. I fear our time is mad, so that for us, the example of a man like Father Pietro is so rare." All attempts by the social office of the Bishop to induce the Priest to return, were unsuccessful.

Father Pietro had contact with a family from the village of Montemonaco, which lays some 20km from Father's abode. The father, Franco D'Agonsino, then wrote to the Bishop, "I don't wonder that he doesn't starve up there! The climb is difficult, and I bring Father Pietro something to eat, and every time his larder is bare. he appears not to be concerned by it. When the snow falls, he is cut off for months at a time. I don't know how he endures."

In the summer of 2003 a letter arrived at the Diocese of Ascoli Piceno: Father Pietro wrote only one sentence: "The Monastery is finished." The Bishop traveled by helicopter to the place and wrote a report to the Vatican thereon only one sentence: "What I have seen, is a wonder."

The Village of Monemonaco in central Italy has about 700 inhabitants and lays about two hours by car from the beaches on the Adriatic. And suddenly visitors from all parts of the world came to the village to ask the way to the Gola del Infernaccio
canyon in order to see "a saint". Great gaps in the cliff walls are witness thereto, how over decades of work by hand, block upon block had been separated from the cliff.

After four hours of climbing the visitor suddenly arrives at a beautiful Monastery building. Father Pietro Lavini receives visitors happily and says: "Naturally, I could never have built these great buildings alone. That was beyond the power of a man, God desired it. God had given me this life's dream: 'Build me there, where it is impossible, a house under impossible conditions, and I will sustain you, heal your sickness and give you to eat, even when you think you must starve.'

Madonnas Who Weep Blood

The ZDF (German Television Two) is showing a three part series about the miracles and unusual occurances in the Church -- following an idea from Andreas Englisch -- First part is available -- kathTube-special: The Tears of the Madonna of Syracuse.

Mainz [kath.net] Madonnas weeping blood, people, who are suddenly cured of serious illnesses or supposedly bear the wounds of Jesus: Are the unexplained phenomena signs of God's influence or deception of charlatanry? And why does the Catholic Church need miracles? The three part documentary "Power of Miracles -- The Secrets of the Vatican" began yesterday, Tuesday, the 26th of October. The following episodes are set for Tuesday at 20.15. The idea for the film comes finally from Andreas Englisch, the former Vatican Correspondent of the newspaper BILD.

The investigation follows authors Volker Schmidt-Sonderman and Peter Syudow in the wings of the Vatican, but also the holy sites throughout the entire world. People explain initially "their" miracles for the camera, experts contracted by ZDF attempt to explain the miracles with scientific methods. And finally it gets to the question, why Pope John Paul II., who more people raise "to the honor of the altars" than any of his predecessors, is to be canonized.

Part I, "When Madonnas Weep", explains among other things a story from Civitavecchia, where in 1995 a statue of the Mother of God in the garden of the family Gregori should have wept blood for give consecutive days.. Thousands of pilgrims have drawn to this village north of Rome. Actually, the Vatican doesn't recognize the "miracle". The statue was taken away and medically tested -- proof can not be obtained. Only one "weeping miracle" has been recognized by the Vatican up to this point, it is said to have happened in 1953 in Syracuse, Sicily. The ZDF-Three part series takes the objections and shows exciting components: how does the strict Congregation decide what are miracles, and which are not? Which role does the "voice of the people" play? And why did John Paul II have a Marian statue brought from Civitavecchia to Rome, in order to pray to her?

Part 2, "When those marked by death come back to life", runs on Tuesday, November 2nd, 20.15 hrs, among other things in the Marian Shrine of Medjugorje, where the Mother of God is said to regularly appear before six seers. More than fifty million people, among them many priests, have pilgrimaged, to a site which the Vatican has refused recognition.

"Who fights with the devil" is the title of the 3rd part of the documentary, which will air at the same time as the previous two. One of the features of this show will be the Capuccin priest, Padre Pio, who was canoized by John Paul II. in 2002 . This was astonishing, above all for the reason that his predecessor held Padre Pio, who is said to have born the wounds of Jesus and had the power of bilocation, for a swindler and a cheat.
