Curial Cardinal Reacts Calmly to Charges of Embezzlement

Through dubious property transactions Cardinal Calcagnos allegedly caused the loss of millions

Vatican City (kath.net/KAP) The top Vatican property manager, Cardinal Domenico Calcagno, has reacted calmly to the allegation of misappropriation of Church funds. He wished to await the delivery of the documents by the Italian public prosecutor's office, said the Vatican press office with weekend. The prosecutor of Savona had previously launched investigations against the president of the Vatican administration of goods APSA. It accuses him, in his time as a bishop in northern Italy, Savona to have caused the loss of millions by questionable property deals.

Calcagno would point out that his alleged irregularities were mainly in the period after his move to the Vatican on July 7, 2007, so the inquest continues. The Vatican also stressed that the allegations have nothing to do with Calcagno's current task.

The Italian cleric was first secretary of the APSA; Since 2011 he was at the head of the authority that manages the real-estate of the Vatican.

Calgagno is supposed, according to prosecutors, to have misappropriated funds from the Church's own "Institute for the Support of Clerics" in Savona, the Church funds managed in order to pay for the social security of priests.

The mismanagement of the Institute was noticed according to media reports, upon a review of the balance sheets from the year 2009. According to the reports, there is also an investigation against Pietro Tartarotti, who headed the Institute until 2014 and his deputy, Gianmichele Baldi. The two were reportedly already asked about the incidents.

Grieving Parents Call for Reform of Corrupt Benedictine Abbey in Minnesota

Edit: back in March, we took notice of the almost unanimous absence in local reporting of the abuse and suicide of Ben Spanier, and the man who most directly caused it, the Prior of St. John's Abbey, Father Tom Andert, now on leave of absence.  Andert was subsequently placed on restriction and relived of his duties pending the investigation.  When the story of Andert's dismissal broke, the local news media completely ignored Ben's very credible accusations and his death, covered almost exclusively in a blog by a former alumnus of St. John's Preparatory School.

Only yesterday, National Public Radio, itself born at Collegeville, did a piece about Ben's parents, who are calling for a change in the "culture of secrecy" at St. John's Abbey.  It's not clear what is meant by this, but the sincerity of his grieving parents and the contempt with which they've been treated by the Abbey is very real, indeed.

To date, no one is calling for the resignation of Abbot John Klassen who has consistently lied to protect predators and preserve the atmosphere of heresy in collegeville.  Those who were very vocal in calling for the resignation of Archbishop John Nienstedt, like the dissident St. John's alum, Father Mark Tegeder, are completely silent now.

How a story like this could be passed over in the local Catholic and secular media is truly a thing to behold.  We hope this call for reform isn't a call for their kind of reform.

[NPR] His parents say his problems began 20 years earlier, when he was a student at St. John's Prep in Collegeville. They say their son wasn't the same after he began spending time with the Rev. Tom Andert, a prominent priest who was placed on leave earlier this year for a separate allegation of sexual misconduct.
The Spaniers say they're coming forward now because they want the culture at St. John's to change. Ben Spanier had attempted suicide before. His father, Eric, will never forget picking up the phone that night in 1994. On the other end of the line was the Rev. Tom Andert, the head of the boarding school at St. John's, where Ben was a junior.
"I answered the phone," Eric Spanier said. "He was calling from the emergency room in the hospital, so it was a shock."
He said he was relieved the priest was there to care for his son.

Davenport Bishop Compromises with Evil

Edit: after doing the right thing initially, the Bishop of Davenport materially cooperates with moral evil and strikes a compromise with homosexual pressure group.

A young man receives an award from the group and no one seems to be worried about his immortal soul.

Sacked Australian Bishop Replaced

Edit: Is it open season on the dinosaur set stuck in the 60, following old scripts that no one is moved by any longer? His successor may not be much better.
[The Australian]
THE Pope last night announced the appointment of a NSW priest as Bishop of Toowoomba, replacing Bishop Bill Morris, who was effectively sacked last year.

The new bishop will be Monsignor Robert McGuckin, 68, a senior priest of the Diocese of Parramatta, where he is Episcopal Vicar for Health and Social Welfare.

He is also a part-time lecturer in the School of Law at the University of Notre Dame and has degrees in theology and church law.

After leaving school he worked in banking for several years before studying for the priesthood and being ordained in 1973.

The German Bishops Profit from Porn: Weltbild

Edit: This has been an issue for thirty years. Kath.net has just reported that Cologne has severed their relationship with Weltbild, an enormous publishing company which falls in just under Amazon in terms of revenue. Recently, there has been a tremendous reaction against this which is becoming increasingly intense.

The following article is from an anti-Catholic publication, 'Business Insider'. The only people reporting on this so far in English, are anti-Catholics. The conservative Catholic German media has been reporting on it non-step for the last two or three weeks.

One of Germany's largest publishing companies, Weltbild, has over 2,500 erotic novels in its online catalogue. Its owned 100 percent by the German Catholic Church.

Worldcrunch, summarizing an article by German newspaper Die Welt, says that for over 10 years Catholics have complained about the company, which has been owned by the church for over 30 years. The high point of this opposition came in 2008, when a 70-page report on the book sales was sent to bishops.

Die Welt reports that the situation came to light after a report this month mentioned the erotica distributed by Weltbild. The publication also said that over half of the bishops who were sent the report in 2008 failed to acknowledge receipt of the document.
