Will Progressive Outsider Be Responsible in Future for the Appointment of Bishops?

(Washington) Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia has been attacked by the media as an "enemy" of the Pope, because he interpreted the Post-Synodal Letter Amoris laetitia in the light of Catholic moral teaching and Sacraments. Archbishop Blase  Cupich of Chicago has been appointed at the same time by Pope Francis as a member of the Congregation for Bishops, and will continue to have a decisive influence on the appointment of bishops in the United States. The two events are emblematic of the pontificate of Pope Francis and his relationship with the Church in the United States. The Church in the United States is not only the richest and one of the most influential churches in the world, the US episcopate being formed by  the pontificates of John Paul II. and especially Benedict XVI., as an  "obstacle" for the progressive agenda.
As reported,  the profile Archbishop of Philadelphia, a direct descendant of the Saint King Louis IX. of France, is in the crossfire of criticism, because he published on July 1,  the "Pastoral Guidelines for the Implementation of Amoris Laetitia" in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (see NCR's Archbishop Chaput affirmed Catholic teaching on marriage and is presented by the media as an "enemy" of the Pope ). In it,  Archbishop Chaput reiterated Catholic marriage and morality in terms of divorce, remarriage and reception of Communion. The archbishop is it shown by the media as  an "enemy" of Pope Francis, who wishes, unlike Msgr. Chaput, for an "opening".

Pope Francis appoints Cupich in the Congregation for Bishops

Today it was announced in the daily bulletin of the Holy See that Pope Francis has appointed the controversial bishop of the United States, Archbishop Blase Cupich, a member of the Congregation of Bishops. He will thus have a say in the future, a decisive say, in the appointment of bishops in the United States.

Msgr. Cupich is controversial because of his progressive stance . The former bishop of the little diocese of Spokane in Illinois was considered "leftist outsider" among the bishops of the United States, as Pope Francis made him an archbishop  in September 2014 of the most important and largest diocese in the country. The Pope had clashed   with the then incumbent predecessor, Cardinal Francis George, head to head,  who died a few months later from cancer.  Who the favor of the Pope belongs, was also made clear that Cupich, who had not been elected by the US bishops as a delegate to the Synod for Bishops  for the  Synod on the Family to Rome, was appointed by Francis personally to the synod. In Rome he was then promptly praised for his "open" attitude on the controversial issues, particularly his " Deliramenta" on the subjective conscience.

Pope "is looking for the most progressive candidate"

Cupich's progressive outsider role is therefore not a defect, but has been the real reason why Francis made him the archbishop of Chicago, as Catholic observers are unanimous about in the US.
In an essay for Le Journal de Montréal  Alain Pronkin wrote on April 19, 2016: Pope Francis is looking at the episcopal appointments "for the most progressive candidate." In November 2015, the Vatican expert Sandro Magister drew attention because the "real revolution" of Pope Francis would succeed "by appointment".
The cardinalatial dignity is usually associated with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and Chicago. In the United States it will be closely monitored, which of the two metropolitans Pope Francis will rise into the cardinalatial state.

Archbishop Cupich instead Cardinal Burke

Under Pope Benedict XVI., it was the former Archbishop of Saint Louis, Raymond Leo Burke, who was assigned as one of the "bishop makers" in the US. The German pope summoned the farmer's son from Wisconsin and brilliant canon lawyer  to the Roman Curia to Rome in 2008 and made him Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, the Vatican's high court.
The influence of  the outstanding and traditionally friendly cardinal, who was even considered "papabile" during the papal conclave of 2013, made him a thorn in the side to those  who found an ear in high places with the election of Pope Francis. The Argentine Pope dismissed the US Cardinal: In December 2013, he removed Cardinal Burke from the Canonization Congregation and from the Congregation for Bishops. The latter decision was seen as a demonstrative departure "from the excellent " episcopal appointments (Fr. Joseph Fessio SJ, student of Joseph Ratzinger) in the US by Benedict XVI. for which  Cardinal Burke was significantly responsible..
The appointment of  Bishop Cupich as Archbishop of Chicago confirmed fears.

Cupich the new "Bishop maker" in the US

By his appointment as member of the Congregation for Bishops, as an observer, Archbishop Cupich would be to take a role in the appointment of bishops in the United States in the pontificate of Francis, which  Cardinal Burke had in the pontificate of Benedict XVI.. However, the orientation of the appointments will be quite different.
Cupich will not directly be accepting  the seat of Cardinal Burke. He had become, even before the Synod of Bishops in 2014, the spokesman of the defenders of Catholic moral teaching and Sacraments against the progressive Kasper agenda. Although he had already been quite clearly threatened with dismissal, he would not give up his resistance, and  the Cardinal fearlessly continued his fight for the traditional doctrine and did not hesitate also to call out Pope Francis as the relevant director of the attack on the sacrament of marriage. A few days after the conclusion of the Synod of Bishops, Pope Francis, "thanked"  him   Cardinal Burke by dismissing him and removing him from the Vatican. Thus, the Church leader beheaded the opposition to his "opening" and favored the Kasper Group.
At Burke's place in the Congregation for Bishops, Pope Francis put Cardinal Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington D.C. in December 2013,  who is known in the US episcopate as a "moderate conservative.".Cardinal Wuerl took the papal grace he had obtained via the anti-Burke function, very seriously. So seriously, that he publicly attacked his American brother Burke early in 2015, when he was punished by the Pope and completely removed from the Roman Curia and reproached him for criticizing papal decisions and defaming them.

Now the pope is no longer dependent on Cardinal Wuerl. In the meantime, there with Archbishop Cupich, is a real "man of the Pope" in the US episcopate. With today's appointment of Cupich in the Congregation for Bishops, Pope Francis the will turnout consistently new offices to continue with the aim:to rebuild the US episcopate.

Archbishop Cupich: Catholics Must Show "Mercy to Non-Traditional Families" -- End of Pallium Ceremony as We Know it

(New York), he is considered one of the progressive "outsiders" in the American episcopate. There is talk about the Msgr. Cupich, appointed in September 2014 appointed by the Pope Francis as the new archbishop of Chicago. It's a  decision that found the disapproval  emeritus Chicago Shepherd, Francis Cardinal George,.
Still missing is the official confirmation by Rome, but  Archbishop Cupich is to be one of the participants in the Bishops' Synod on the Family personally appointed by Pope Francis. The American Bishops' Conference had not chosen Cupich   for the Synod seat. But Pope Francis seems to put emphasis on a counter position to the majority opinion of the Episcopal Conference.
The Archbishop has now called the Catholics of his diocese  "to embrace change".  Moreover, Catholics should show "mercy towards non-traditional families." [Weren't we supposed to be merciless? What gives!]
At least one unfortunate phrase, as they say in the US, was Archbishop Cupich's message on the occasion of receiving the pallium, which took place on 23 August.
"At risk are not extra-familial forms of living, the family is at risk. They need protection and words of encouragement, rather than giving the impression that the family is currently an obligation towards extra-familial forms," said Francisco Fernandez de la Cigoña.
As is known, Pope Francis changed the Pallium Rite. Unlike what was once usual, it is no longer the Pope, who hangs a pallium about the newly appointed metropolitan  in a solemn ceremony. The bestowal of office took place for the first time  in 2015 in the cathedral church of the respective metropolitan by the competent apostolic nuncio.
What has been seen as a form to strengthen the ties with Rome and of fidelity to the Pope, will now serve decentralization and the strengthening of the local Church.

Bishop Orders Return of the Tabernacle to the Middle of the Sanctuary in His Diocese

Tabernacle: All Holy Sacrament of the Altar as the
Center Point of the Sanctuary
(New York) The Bishop of Springfield in Illinois, Msgr. Thomas John Paprocki Joseph, gave instructions to return the tabernacle with the Blessed Sacrament back into the center of the sanctuary in the churches of his diocese.
Bishop Paprocki, who was appointed in 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI., wrote the pastoral letter Ars et celebrandi adorandi to his diocese. In it he points to the rich tradition and teaching of the Church for celebration and adoration of the Holy Eucharist.
The bishop also outlines the historical development over the past decades and is critical of the displacement of the Blessed Sacrament from the center of the chancel and sometimes even its utter removal from the sanctuary. The places in which the Blessed Sacrament was banished, sometimes are not more than rudimentarily adapted closets. This removal of the Blessed Sacrament to often difficult-to-find side chapels has to come to an end.

Pastoral Letter Ars et celebrandi adorandi

Bishop Paprocki of Springfield Illinois in
"With this in mind, in order that more of the faithful will be able to spend time in adoration and prayer in the presence of the Eucharistic Lord, I direct that in the churches and chapels of our diocese, tabernacles that were formerly in the center of the sanctuary, but have been moved, are to be returned as soon as possible to the center of the sanctuary in accord with the original architectural design. Tabernacles that are not in the center of the sanctuary or are otherwise not in a visible, prominent and noble space are to be moved to the center of the sanctuary; tabernacles that are not in the center of the sanctuary but are in a visible, prominent and noble space may remain."
The first part refers to churches which were built before the liturgical reform, the other two parts on churches built afterwards.
Bishop Paprocki calls the believers to mind that the proper reverence for the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament is to genuflect. The bishop calls the diocese, to spend more time with the Eucharist to promote Eucharistic Adoration and Eucharistic processions through the streets of the parishes.

The fertile soil of Chicago

The Diocese of Springfield is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Bishop Paprocki comes from the Archdiocese of Chicago and in 1978 was ordained a priest there. In 2003 Pope John Paul II. appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago under Francis Cardinal George. Pope Francis accepted the Cardinal's resignation last September 20  for reasons of age at 77 years. The appointment of Blaise Cupich, his successor, is considered one of the most controversial personnel decisions of the Argentine Pope. Msgr. Cupich is considered one of the liberal outsiders in the US episcopate.
Cardinal George recently exercised strong criticism of Pope Francis. Both Chicago and Springfield have an above average number of priestly vocations. Bishop Paprocki is also a promoter of old Rite institutions in his diocese.

Removal of all Free Standing "Peoples' altars" says Bishop Oliveri

Example of an unnecessary duplication: new "people's altar" before already existing high altar
The measure of Bishop Paprocki is reminiscent of a measure of Bishop Mario Oliveri of Albenga-Imperia, Italy.  Bishop Oliveri was to remove all the "peoples' altars" from the churches of his diocese in which they appeared  because of the presence of a senior, high altar, made an unnecessary duplication and was incomprehensible. These and other measures of the bishop of the Catholic renewal, earned him the enmity of some ideological Church circles.
Against Bishop Oliveri, there was last October in the interaction of internal church staff and unchurched circles a smear campaign started with the intent to obtain his deposition that can be hoped for by Pope Francis (see the report Papal Purges  and their Claques- direction, not allegations decisive? ).  Msgr. Oliveri is still the acting bishop of the diocese.

St. Sabina's Erects Shrine to St. Treyvon of the Purple Drank

Edit: today, we are told by a correspondent that St. Sabina's parish, run by the controversial and heterodox Father Michael Pflugger, has created a shrine to the non-Catholic Treyvon Martin,  who was shot and killed by a man defending himself on February 26th of this year.
How will Trey get his Drank on in the Afterlife Without Tussin?

Apart from the obvious objection that Treyvon wasn't Catholic and couldn't be canonized, there seems to be something missing from the altar which attempts to portray the assailant's innocence and goodness with the trademark skittles and watermelon tea.

What is omitted in the usual descriptions of these items is the fact that Treyvon also had Robitussin, an over the counter medicine used for common ailments, but also to make an intoxicating gangster cocktail    known as "lean" or "drank" which makes use of skittles and watermelon tea.

You forgot the tussin!

From the comments on AmericanThinker:

Trayvon, with his hoodie up, grabs two items from the shelves of 7-11.  One is the Skittles.  The other is Arizona Watermelon Fruit Juice Cocktail.  The media avoid the name of the real drink -- possibly because of the racial implications of the word "watermelon," but possibly to avoid probing the real reason for Trayon's trip.
Trayvon, in fact, had become a devotee of the druggy concoction known as "Lean," also known in southern hip-hop culture as "Sizzurp" and "Purple Drank."  Lean consists of three basic ingredients -- codeine, a soft drink, and candy.  If his Facebook postings are to be believed, Trayvon had been using Lean since at least June 2011.
On June 27, 2011, Trayvon asks a friend online, "unow a connect for codien?"  He tells the friend that "robitussin nd soda" could make "some fire ass lean."  He says, "I had it before" and that he wants "to make some more."  On the night of February 26, if Brandy had some Robitussin at home, Trayvon had just bought the mixings for one "fire ass lean" cocktail.
Thank goodness that Father Pfleger is in good standing with the Chicago Archdiocese.

Lou Ferrakhan Comes to Dissident Priest’s Chicago Parish

Edit: last week we noticed that the unstoppable Father Micheal Pfleger of Chicago had invited Louis Ferrakhan to his parish for an interfaith gathering on March 1st.  There is no sign of the ACLU or the SPLC and the usual professional whiners. Cardinal George at least has tacit approval of this event.   He wrote the following report in his usual understated way on his Facebook page:
Woke up just thanking God for His Goodness and Mercy this Morning! Minister Farrakhan gave such a Beautiful Message of Unity and Love last Night! He challenged us to come together and be made New in Christ! To lay down our weapons and use the gift of our Minds and Hearts. He reminded us of the Power of Light! I am so grateful for his friendship. He is my friend, my Brother and Mentor. I pray that the World will embraces his message and that we come together!
Famous quotes:

"White people are potential humans - they haven't evolved yet.”
 Philadelphia Inquirer, March 2000

"They [the Jews] are the greatest controllers of black minds, black intelligence. They write the scripts - the foolish scripts on television that our people portray. They are the movie moguls that feature us in these silly, degrading, degenerate roles.

"The great recording companies that portray our people in such a filthy and low-rating way, yet they would not allow such a man as Michael Jackson to say one word that they thought would besmirch their reputation, but they put us before the world as clowns and as purveyors of filth. No, I will fight that.”
Meet The Press interview, October 1998

"The Jews have been so bad at politics they lost half their population in the Holocaust. They thought they could trust in Hitler, and they helped him get the Third Reich on the road." Saviours' Day speech, Chicago, February 1998

"Of course, they [the Jews] have a very small number of people but they are the most powerful in the world, they have the power to do good and they have the power to do evil ... Now what do the Jews do best? Well, they have been the best in finance that the world has ever known …

"They finance a lot of stuff in the world, and there's nothing wrong with that, but they are not good politicians, they are the worst politicians because they don't recognise really their friends and as well their enemies ... " Saviours' Day speech, Chicago, February 1998

"It seems like being gay or whatever sin you wish to be a part of is okay ... but I have the duty to lift that gay person up to the standard to ask if they want to live the life that God wants them to or live the lifestyle that they want to live." Boston speech, August 1997

"I believe that for the small numbers of Jewish people in the United States, they exercise a tremendous amount of influence on the affairs of government ...Yes, they exercise extraordinary control, and black people will never be free in this country until they are free of that kind of control ... " Meet The Press interview, April 1997

"I don't own Hollywood. Who depicted black people? Who writes the books? Who writes the plays, the songs that make us look less than human? Do you mean to tell me that Jews have never done any evil to black people? …

"Were they not involved in the slave trade? Yes, they were ... and to the extent that they were involved, somebody has to bring them to account. And I believe that has fallen on me." Interview with New York Amsterdam News, January 1994

Cardinal George Encourages Innovation of Liturgical Deaconesses

Women Readers Are Also an Innovation
Edit: despite the evidence to the contrary and the well-established fact that accommodating women in Liturgical roles like Reader [women are still not ordained as Readers although there have been suggestions to make it so], and has a negative effect on new vocations and is wholly an unprecedented innovation, Cardinal George is encouraging a woman to enter into the Deaconate.  He's saying that he will bring up the issue on his visit to Rome.

One nun, however, is discouraging this mistaken notion.  This notion that ordaining women to the Diaconate will ease alleged discontent over the issue is a fatuous one, for when have revolutionaries ever been satisfied with merely a concession.   What's lacking here is an understanding of reality.  Women were never legitimately functional in the Liturgy and they never will be.   A nun from Mundeline puts it this way.

Sister Sara Butler, a professor of systematic theology at the University of St. Mary of the Lake Mundelein Seminary, said the role of women deacons in the early church was never the same as that of male deacons. Female deacons had separate duties such as ministering exclusively to women, and they received their ordination in separate rites, she said.

"I don't think there's any precedent for inviting women into the form of permanent diaconate," she said.

Women with ministerial roles also never completely disappeared, she said. Butler believes women deacons morphed into abbesses or leaders in monastic communities.

Cardinal George Compares Gomorrist Parade to KKK

Edit: In a welcome demonstration of courage and wit, the Chicago's Cardinal compared the individuals associated with a Gomorristic parade to the KKK in their anti-Catholic rhetoric.  As if to confirm the Cardinal's well chosen words, a comment firestorm can be witnessed on Huffpo that demonstrates profound ignorance and bigoted anti-Catholic venom.

The parade has been moved to Sunday and it is legitimately feared that the throng will prevent people from getting to Mass.

Cardinal Francis George, the Archbishop of Chicago, this week told a Chicago news station that he agreed with a local Roman Catholic church’s objections to the city’s recently-adjusted Gay Pride Parade route passing by its doors and warned that the parade could “morph into the Ku Klux Klan.”
George made the comment Sunday on Fox Chicago when asked about Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s complaints that the parade passing by its Belmont Avenue location would force the church to cancel its morning mass. The church recently launched a petition urging the city to force parade organizers to adjust their plans.
“I go with the pastor,” George told Fox. “He’s telling us that he won’t be able to have services on Sunday if that’s the case. You don’t want the gay liberation movement to morph into something like the Ku Klux Klan, demonstrating in the streets against Catholicism.” [more]

City Doing Work on Mayor Daley's Parish: Chicago Corruption

(POSTED: 1/23/10) A high-ranking Daley administration official who was described at the Robert Sorich trial as a cog in the city's patronage hiring operation should be fired, a government watchdog is recommending.

But being part of a scheme to hire and promote politically connected employees wasn't Deputy Water Management Commissioner Tommie Talley's only alleged transgression.

Talley also dispatched city water department crews to work at private sites -- including Nativity of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church, the mayor's ancestral parish in Bridgeport, Chicago's inspector general found, according to city government sources.

News site uncovers political party affiliations of Chicago bishops, chancery staff

December 22, 2009

An investigation by an independent Chicago Catholic news site has found Democrats and Republicans among the Archdiocese of Chicago’s auxiliary bishops and key members of the chancery staff.

Those who requested Democratic ballots in 2008 included retired Auxiliary Bishop John Gorman, retired Auxiliary Bishop Timothy Lyne, archdiocesan chancellor Jimmy Lago, and Father Raymond Baumhart, SJ. Those who requested Republican ballots included Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Paprocki, Father Daniel Flens (Cardinal George’s secretary), and Father Thomas Baima, vice president and provost of Mundelein Seminary. In addition, Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Perry said that he voted for presidential candidate John McCain in the general election.

Cardinal George advocates Medical Wealth confiscation

Cardinal George at CNS is quoted here describing the priest's role as a conduit for Democratic Party talking points and Socialist wealth redistribution programs. It's well nigh impossible to imagine what expertise this Cardinal has in the health care field, but he has a large captive audience and is good at uttering soothing words of encouragement. It would be understandable if not a few people are more confused than ever about the role of a priest.

Recently, he noted, "we have tried to be such a leaven in the debate about health care. It is not for us to speak to a particular means of delivering health care; it is our responsibility, however, to insist, as a moral voice concerned with human solidarity, that everyone should be cared for and that no one should be deliberately killed."
